When Solo Leveling first hit the airwaves, I couldn't contain my excitement. With a whirlwind of anticipation surrounding it and countless recommendations from friends and online forums, I eagerly awaited what I hoped would be a groundbreaking series. However, as the episodes unfolded, it became apparent that the show failed to live up to its hype.
While it would be unfair to label Solo Leveling as entirely lacking merit, it falls short of expectations in several key areas. Despite moments of promise, the overall execution fails to deliver a truly captivating experience.
The first two episodes were probably the best ones really. They set up the world, and it's premise, while also introducing us to the MC and showing off how clever and selfless they are... But it all goes downhill from there.
The plot just feels so bland and predictable. Like it's so similar to other shows that have tried to do this same (or a similar) concept, except Solo Leveling doesn't really improve on it in any way. If anything, it just makes it somehow worse in some parts.
The characters are seriously unlikeable too. Later on they start to make some really questionable choices that don't make a whole lot of sense, some are just really boring or annoying, and the MC's personality kind of takes a turn for the worse. Like I thought he was pretty cool early on, but eventually they just seriously made me roll my eyes. They went from having a unique design to just completely changing into a generic protagonist with perfect looks, some serious plot armor, and a bit of an ego to top it all off.
There's also this love interest later on who just gets shoehorned in, because I guess we really needed it. Like there's no reason for them to have feelings for this character when they don't have much history or any reason to feel attracted to them.
The show also constantly cuts to these other characters who we don't really know anything about other than the fact that they're supposed to be big deals in the world, but it just feels like useless padding. Are we supposed to care about these characters who we know nothing about? 8 episodes in and they've yet to add anything to the story. One character in particular feels so forced into the plot as soon as episode 1, I'm assuming for some eye candy, because again, they haven't done anything to add on to the story, and yet we keep getting shots of her from behind, if you know what I mean.
The only thing I can give this show are the visuals, because yes, the animation can look pretty cool... But only sometimes. The earlier action sequences are great, but as the show goes on, they just kind of lose any suspense or tension because of the plot armor. And once you take those away, you're left with a seriously mediocre show.
I really tried to keep an open mind with this show; really hanging on and waiting for it to get good, but it's just such a disappointment. With all the hype surrounding this show, I was expecting so much more, which yeah is probably a part of the problem. Just ignore all the hype and instead draw your own conclusion, or you may end up seriously disappointed and let down. And keep in mind that if you didn't enjoy SAO or anything similar, you probably won't enjoy this.
